Continuity Editing

Continuity editing is the technique that a director may intentionally use to ensure that a piece of film appears naturalistic; in other words, we as audience members do not notice the editing. For the preliminary task, we had to portray our understanding of Continuity editing through a short movie which had to include the following factors: eye line match, which is when the character and an object is in proportion of where they would be in real life, match on action which is very popular in continuity editing; ensuring two different shots match a certain action or, showing a certain action in chronological order using two shots. Finally, it was crucial for our short films to abide with the 180 degree rule. It could be argued that this rule is the most important as the camera is only allowed to go anywhere in the 180 degree regime, and not beyond. This is crucial as if the camera does not abide with this rule, the characters or the objects will appear on different sides of the frame, making it look very unnatural. The only time where the characters can cross the 180 degree line is if the camera is shown doing so; for example if it tracks, or pans around the characters or objects within the frame.

  1. What else did you have to include. I t was not just the 180 degree rule. Give image examples to illustrate your points.
