Evaluation

For our preliminary task, we had to show someone walking into a room, sitting down and having a conversation with someone else. Firstly my group and I storyboarded our ideas. My group and I discussed and shared our ideas of what the scenario was to be in order to make our piece more interesting. We decided for our scenario to be as follows: a brother and sister are in a school or college setting. Previously, they have been arguing with each other via text message and are awaiting a confrontation, to discuss what has been said. We also had to portray our understanding of Continuity editing through a short movie which had to include the following factors: eye line match, which is when the character and an object is in proportion of where they would be in real life, match on action which is very popular in continuity editing; ensuring that there are more than one shot showing a certain action in chronological order and finally, the our short films HAD to abide with the 180 degree rule.

We commenced our task by creating a storyboard to aid us through the different processes, we started filming. The first day we filmed proved the hardest as the realisation of how long it actually takes and how precise everything must be really begun to sink in. We started out by going over the storyboard we had then even tried to map out exactly where the camera would be for each shot. What we found difficult was the fact that the factors had to be exactly the same for each shot; for example, if I had to point my finger at David in a long shot and a close up, my finger would have to be in exactly the same place and be correspondent with the background for both shots. Unfortunately, it was only in the editing stage that we noticed this. Another factor that became a challenge was as the costume had to be exactly the same for every lesson. Some members of my group found it quite hard as they forgot meaning that we had to think up ways to come around that. We did this by changing the shot types, and experimenting with lighting. The storyboarding process was however very helpful as we as a group worked from it and could change our ideas without going too off track.
The final process was the editing process, which was the most difficult it required the most concentration and time to make the piece flow. On the whole, the preliminary task was quite exiting as we explored the different techniques that go in to making a continuity piece of film.
